Historic Preservation Commission

Edwardsville's Historic Preservation Commission was established in 1977 to maintain the City's long tradition of taking proactive steps to preserve its historic character. 

The Commission is responsible for preserving historic buildings, gardens and streetscapes, as well as the overall historic character of the community. The Commission reviews projects that are inside the boundaries of the city's Historic Districts and projects that affect individual landmark properties in the City. The Commission reviews proposals for complete and partial demolitions, for new construction and requests for building variances. The Commission is also responsible for reviewing and evaluating the design and compatibility of additions and alterations. Since its inception, the Commission has been involved in numerous efforts and projects to highlight the City's cultural character and heritage and showcase the City's historic roots. The Commission was a driving force behind the City's annual Route 66 Festival to honor the historic byway that once traversed Edwardsville, and was integral in preserving historic buildings and items such as the Edwardsville National Bank clock, which was given a permanent home in 1998 on a downtown clock tower.

The Commission is comprised of up to 11 Edwardsville residents who are appointed by the Mayor, with the approval of the City Council. Commissioners serve three-year terms. The Commission is governed by the Historic Preservation Ordinance.
