The duties and functions of the Human Relations Commission shall be: 

  • To cooperate with mayor, council and city departments, agencies and officials in promoting inter group relations which develop respect for equal rights
  • To promote respect for equal rights and dignity; to promote equal treatment to all persons to public accommodations and facilities
  • To promote equal opportunity to all persons to purchase, lease, rent or occupy housing
  • To maintain equality of opportunity and advancement in the city government
  • To create a file system suitable for use in the prevention of discrimination and promotion of equal treatment
  • To recommend to the mayor and council ordinances and resolutions which promote equal treatment and prevent discrimination
  • To commend institutions, organizations, groups, societies, businesses, etc., for successes in the area of human relations
  • To develop and maintain a list of human rights specialists who would be available to assist the community in the event of a human relations problem
  • To conduct hearings in the event of an allegation of a human relations violation by a city employee and to disseminate public information on methods of preventing human relations problems (codified ordinances chapter 270)
